Site Safety Coordinator

Site Safety Coordinator

Role Overview

The Site Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring a secure and functional environment for all Safe Hub operations. This role involves the diligent monitoring of personnel and resources; however, it is critical to note that the Coordinator must not engage in law enforcement activity. Their primary focus is the logistical safety of the site, which includes selecting secure entry and exit points, identifying areas for weather shelter, and establishing designated zones, such as volunteer staging, resource storage, and staff rest facilities, to support the other coordinators in their roles. In many cases, the Site Safety Coordinator also serves as a greeter, providing a welcoming presence while directing visitors to the appropriate manager for assistance. To be effective, this individual should hold at least basic first-aid training and maintain a deployable first-aid kit. A background in general building maintenance or construction is highly beneficial, as the role often requires creative problem-solving and the ability to modify or “scavenge” materials to improve Safe Hub functionality.

When designing the layout of the Safe Hub, the Coordinator must prioritize accessibility for individuals with access and functional needs (AFN). This includes ensuring the site is navigable for those with visual or hearing impairments, as well as those using mobility aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches. Establishing a truly effective site is an iterative process; practitioners should remain patient, as it may take several operational periods to refine to a satisfactory standard.
